For as long as I can remember, the change in weather that comes as summer turns to fall, and winter approaches, makes me wish I could visit someplace warm and sunny. And for nearly thirty years (for me anyway), I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Tempe, Arizona each fall, usually just as the weather turns pretty uninviting where I live. But please know I’m not just providing a plug for tourism. The Teacher Educators for Children with Behavioral Disorders (TECBD) conference has been one of the most informative, constructive, and valuable professional opportunities I have ever encountered. If you’re like me, and particularly if your professional life revolves around schooling in any form or capacity, you look forward to summertime each year. You do this with the undying hope it brings a break from at least some traditional duties, a more relaxed pace, and time to catch up on some professional and personal tasks you just didn’t have time for during the school year but promised to catch up on once summer arrived and things slowed down. When David moved to Kansas in 2013 the local chapter of Delta Tau Delta at University of Kansas reached out, needing an advisor. He initially declined, but they lowered the response effort by offering a co-advisor so he accepted, though the co-advisor never materialized. Ultimately a four-year experience full of reinforcement of behaviors (contributions of his time, talent, and treasure), a main focus of his advising was helping the chapter of young men shift from a purely reactive approach to challenging behavior, to a proactive approach that included reinforcing behaviors they wanted to see happen more often in the shelter.
